Opening for operations in 1858, the Pickwick Mill ran for over 120 years, making it one of the oldest water-powered flour mills in the state of Minnesota. During the Civil War, the historic mill was in constant use, running 24 hours a day pumping grain and millet for use in the Union army. When built, the wood frame of the six-story structure was so tightly fit that it did not require nails to keep it together. The mill is located 12 miles southeast of Winona and 5 miles from the Great River Bluffs State Park on the Minnesota-Wisconsin border.
